A tragic loss has been reported in the world of animal intelligence research. This week, we bid farewell to Ai, a chimpanzee with an extraordinary mind, who has left an indelible mark on our understanding of primate cognition.
Ai, named after the Japanese word for 'love', was a true pioneer. Born in West Africa, she found her way to the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University in Japan at just one year old. Here, she embarked on a remarkable journey, showcasing her exceptional abilities.
Dr. Tetsuro Matsuzawa, a renowned primatologist and former director of the institute, described Ai as the first chimpanzee to successfully label numbers. By the age of five, she had mastered this skill, and her intellectual journey only continued to impress.
At six and a half, Ai began her alphabet adventure, and within a year, she could distinguish all 26 uppercase letters. Her linguistic prowess didn't stop there; by seven and a half, Ai had learned the lexigrams for various fruits and vegetables, and her vocabulary expanded to include over 100 Japanese Kanji characters and 11 colors.
But Ai's talents extended beyond mere recognition. She had a creative side too. In one study, when presented with an apple, Ai chose to draw its virtual representation on a computer screen, selecting a rectangle, a square, and a dot. This artistic inclination led to her creations being featured on a scarf gifted to the esteemed primatologist Dame Jane Goodall.
However, Ai's curiosity and intelligence sometimes led her astray. In 1989, she orchestrated an escape, breaking free from her cage and acquiring a key to liberate her friend Akira, another research chimp, and Doudou, an orangutan. It was a daring move, reminiscent of a primate heist movie, with Ai as the mastermind.
While the escape was short-lived, with Ai eventually being returned to the lab, it raises intriguing questions about her motivation. Was Ai's restless intelligence a driving force, pushing her to explore beyond the confines of her research environment?
