Get ready for a dramatic twist at the iconic Rose Parade! The forecast is calling for a soaking wet New Year's celebration, with rain and potential thunderstorms set to disrupt the festivities.
As the Southland braces for the incoming storm, meteorologists are predicting a near-certain downpour along the parade route. But here's where it gets controversial: will the show go on despite the weather?
"The bulk of the rain is expected to start tonight and continue into tomorrow morning," says Bryan Lewis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Oxnard office. Lewis adds that there's a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms, which could bring an added element of danger with the potential for lightning strikes.
Lightning, as we know, seeks the highest conductive points, raising concerns for the open areas and steel-framed floats of the parade. Should we be worried about the safety of spectators and participants? Lewis advises that if lightning does strike, people should seek cover indoors or in vehicles.
Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian assures that parade organizers are prepared for various weather scenarios and will have a meteorologist on-site during the event. "We train for the worst and hope for the best," she says. Derderian highlights the city's resources, including boots-on-the-ground personnel and public address systems, to provide guidance to parade-goers if needed.
In 2006, a similar wet parade saw four floats break down, musicians struggling with wet instruments, and spectators donning ponchos. For this year's event, organizers are taking precautions, with float riders equipped with ponchos and additional tow trucks stationed along the route.
Event attendees are reminded that umbrellas are not permitted, as they obstruct the view for others. Instead, parade organizers suggest bringing a rain jacket or poncho.
Even without lightning, the storm system is expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds, with the potential for urban flooding in Pasadena and throughout Los Angeles. The city's Emergency Operations Center has activated to coordinate preparedness measures, with police reaching out to vulnerable residents and the fire department augmenting staffing for potential rescues.
"Stay vigilant and use caution on the roads," urges Mayor Karen Bass. "We're taking every precaution to keep people safe."
Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that emergency crews are pre-positioned in high-risk areas, especially in recent burn scar zones. "California is bracing for intense winter weather," Newsom says, "and we're prepared to respond."
This New Year's storm follows a Christmas deluge that caused fatalities, toppled trees, and triggered swift-water rescues. Some Southern California mountain communities were buried in mud, highlighting the vulnerability of saturated soil to rock and mudslides.
The incoming system, while not as intense, is still expected to bring significant rainfall, with totals ranging from 3/4 of an inch to 2 inches in coastal and valley areas, and up to 5 inches in foothill and mountain communities. Flood watches have been issued for Los Angeles and Orange counties, with evacuation warnings in effect for areas affected by recent fires.
