A Rare Joy at the Police Station in Huyton
Your letter about the kindness of strangers (January 2, 2026) took me back to my days as a duty sergeant in Huyton during the 1990s. A man entered the station with over £1,000 in a cash bag he had found near a bank's night safe. As we gathered, another man burst in, pale as a ghost, realizing he had left the day's takings behind. Reuniting these two individuals was a heartwarming moment, a small reminder that people can still surprise us with their kindness and honesty.

I appreciate your inspiring article on communities supporting refugees (January 7, 2026), but I must clarify that Ashbourne is not located in the north of England. It is situated in the East Midlands, a mere 140 miles from London. The northern boundary begins in Sheffield, which is over 30 miles away.

Years ago, driving towards the congested town of Woodstock in Oxfordshire, I noticed a large sign that read, 'Woodstock needs a bypass.' Below it, a Peanuts fan had humorously added, 'Snoopy needs a heart transplant' (January 7, 2026).
