Furthermore, the researchers discovered that for every 10 nmol/L increase in vitamin D concentration, the rates of hospital admissions due to respiratory infections declined by 4%. Out of the 27,872 participants analyzed, approximately 2,255 were admitted to hospitals with a respiratory infection.

This issue is particularly pressing for middle-aged and older adults, who are more vulnerable to severe respiratory infections like pneumonia. In light of these findings, the NHS recommends a daily intake of 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the autumn and winter months to combat potential deficiencies caused by reduced sunlight exposure.

In addition to supplements, vitamin D is naturally present in certain foods such as oily fish, red meat, egg yolks, and fortified cereals, offering various dietary options for increasing intake.

Lead researcher Abi Bournot from the University of Surrey emphasizes the importance of receiving at least 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily, especially during the colder months when sunlight is scarce.
