However, due to Roberts' longstanding affiliation and notable achievements with the team, it is highly probable that he will be the final person in the history of the Dodgers franchise to wear that number.
Roberts holds deep sentimental value for No. 30, largely because of his relationship with Maury Wills, a Dodgers icon. Reflecting on this, Roberts stated, "Tucker and I had an enjoyable conversation about the number. I shared how special Maury Wills was to me. He once expressed, ‘When I pass away, I hope no one else wears that number.’ This sentiment resonates with me deeply. Our discussion involved Tucker's agent, Jason Romano, who similarly had a close bond with Maury."
Maury Wills left an indelible mark during his tenure with the Dodgers, which started in 1959 and spanned parts of 12 seasons across two periods with the organization. His illustrious career includes five selections to the All-Star Game, being named the National League MVP, and securing three World Series titles out of four appearances. Wills holds the franchise record for career stolen bases at 490 and ranks in the top ten for total at-bats (6,156), runs scored (876), and total hits (1,732).
In April 2022, he was honored as the fourth inductee into the "Legends of Dodger Baseball" alongside other greats like Steve Garvey and Don Newcombe. His legacy continued to grow when he passed away in September 2022, prompting the Dodgers to wear a commemorative jersey patch in his memory.
